another lovely wedding!

and another artistic effort by yours truly! my colleague got married to his boyfriend, and i had the honour of designing the card to accompany the present we got them. they love travelling on cruise ships (no pun intended), and of course life itself is a journey, so i gave them travel cases. for some reason i also thought of frank sinatra and the titanic (again, no pun intended), so they had to have those fancy 20's/30's suits and everything.

the church ceremony was beautiful. and especially lovely when the three choir girls started to sing "proud" from the gallery, accompanied by a slightly too low karaoke disco beat ... which made everyone smile and turn their heads. (what is it about the couple facing the altar and not the happy crowd? i think they miss a lot.)

practising ...

our inspiration/illustration blog "das, was kommt" is in its eighth week now, and it has been a bit of a bumpy, but very fun ride so far! sometimes i post photos, sometimes i draw, almost always i do it last minute ... this is one of my favourites:

birthday birdie

i have a friend that i call "lieblingshuhn" - "favourite chicken". it was her birthday, and i made her this card with a voucher inside (under the wing).

oh lala

the august 2011 issue of PRINZ features a text on the amusing subject of pepper parties, house parties where ladies can "try" and buy sextoys like vibrators and dildos. and i had the unquestionable pleasure of illustrating this lovely theme ... :)

whatever will be, will be

my friend marcia and i decided to keep ourselves busy by creating a new blog: "das, was kommt" = "that what comes" (pretty bad translation, but you'll get the gist!). every sunday one of us grabs a random novel, randomly opens a page and chooses a sentence. that sentence has to have enough content to be inspiring ... and then we have seven days to go create. you can make anything, it just has to be postable. i have only just uploaded my first (last minute, i confess) work, as seen below, but i think this is a really fun way to stay creative. and everyone can participate, so get to work and send your stuff (on time) to daswaskommt@hotmail.com!

wedding sketch

my colleague got married to her girlfriend last weekend, and i made them a portrait.
i found an old-ish gold frame, and instead of taking out the embroidered flower picture i decided to paint over the fabric to keep the back intact. i forgot to take a picture of the final version which was coloured and of course much more defined, so this early stage will have to do ...

becoming james

i found a stunning portrait of james mcavoy that was begging to be used for something like this ...

it's always fun to switch the layers around and create something like a making of. those versions often turn out to be more to the point or more interesting than the 'finished' image, which might look a little overdone in comparison ...

dandies and gentlemen

after seeing three period dramas in a row - northanger abbey, becoming jane and jane eyre - i'm thinking i might do a series of sketches featuring those brooding gentlemen and dapper dandies ... below is a quick one i did of the lovely matthew macfadyen as mr.darcy in pride and prejudice, looking a bit bewildered.

arthouse vs. 3d

the april 2011 issue of PRINZ features this illustration for a service page with arthouse and 3d cinemas in the frankfurt area. arthouse nerd on the left, 3D freak on the right. the idea was all our editor in chief's, and i think it works nicely - "he needs to read the FAZ ... and he's definitely wearing a cardigan!" :)

marion, 1979

this is my cousin (for want of a better word to specify our relation) marion. she works at a gallery and translates books - i envy her! when we go to berlin we always stay at her flat in kreuzberg. i found an old photograph of her looking very cute and used it as a template for this.

late night shopping

not only one of my favourite pastimes, but also the title of one of my favourite films. starring luke de woolfson (as heike makatsch's boyfriend, lucky girl) ... as seen below. this is a very scrawly version, i think i'll do another one sometime soon.

fluffy thing

sketches for another project on atak's course: humanization of animals, an alphabet.
i drew the letter v and chose the vari (engl. ruffed lemur) as "verschlossener vari" / "withdrawn lemur". later on, the vari wore sweatpants and sat in an armchair in the corner with a beer ...

school trip

my favourite two panels from a comic project i did for a course with the lovely atak. we had to write down the most memorable experience we had on a school trip, then boys and girls had to switch stories and draw the other's ... sadly, my comic didn't make it into the following book, published by reprodukt.

"menschenfleisch" / "manflesh"

"der säufer" / "the alcoholic"

bath time

yes, i do miss having a bathtub to soak in.
luscious lips, long neck and lots of bubbles - "bath swan", anybody?

patrick and beer on a chair

tee and tights

yoo-hoo!

tablet tryouts

a while ago i got a pen tablet. i really need to practise more often, but here are some of the first sketches i made ... it does take some getting used to, but it's fun!

christa pays a visit

this portrait was a present for a dear family friend, she was supposed to get it for her birthday a while ago. but they didn't throw a party that year, so it was sitting on my harddisc, gathering harddisc dust ... last weekend we were invited to dinner at her house, so i did a little reworking, framing and giftwrapping, and it finally reached it's destination. christa, thanks for all the lovely garden parties, hopefully we'll have one again soon!

sven's frankfurt

the september 2010 issue of PRINZ featured renowned dj legend sven väth as local cover star, and this double-page spread, listing his city favourites. at first his agency was concerned about him looking too cartoon-ish, "too nice", but the man himself liked it, so here it is ...

"sex in frankfurt"

was an article in frankfurt's monthly PRINZ magazine in 2009, which featured these illustrations. i like the b/w piggy too much not to show it as well ...

cherry blossom girl

the first on this blog, hopefully the first in a series. you like?
